Dear Parishioners and Friends

Greetings to you all!

Reflections for the 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time year A

During the last four weeks, through the series of parables: the parable of the landowner and the vineyard (Mt 20: 1-16), the parable of the two sons (Mt 21: 28-32), the parable of the wicked tenants (Mt 21: 33- 43) and the parable of the wedding feast (Mt 22: 1-14), Jesus attacked the religious and the political leaders for their failure to accept the Son of God.

Having been on the receiving end of Jesus’ constant attack, now the Pharisees, together with the Herodians, attempt to trap Jesus with this question: ‘Tell us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?’  This trap was set to end the ministry of Jesus on earth. But Jesus asks them for a coin and indicating what is there on the coin and says, “Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar – and to God what belongs to God.”

What is it that “belongs to God”?  It is the human person, who bears the image of the living God (Gen 1: 26-27). So, our highest obligation in life – and one that is imposed on every man, woman and child regardless of nationality or citizenship – is to give ourselves back to our creator. Amen.

What’s on in October

October: The Month of the Rosary

On the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, Pope Francis invited Catholics to rediscover especially during this month of October, the beauty of the prayer of the Rosary, which has nourished the faith of the Christian people throughout the centuries,”  He adds further saying, “I invite you to pray the Rosary, and to carry it in your hands or in your pockets. The recitation of the Rosary is the most beautiful prayer we can offer to the Virgin Mary; it is a contemplation on the stages of the life of Jesus the Saviour with his Mother Mary and is a weapon that protects us from evils and temptations.” Let us continue to commit ourselves in praying the Rosary and praying for everyone in the world as we endure this painful pandemic.

If you want to read the full homily of Pope Francis, please click here.

At the Basilica we will pray the Rosary every day at 11.30am, which will lead us into the Angelus and midday Mass (Monday to Saturday).

WHAT’S ON IN NOVEMBER

Parish Mass Count:   Weekend of 31 October and 1 November 2020

It may be somewhat strange to be conducting a mass count in October as we go through this painful situation caused by COVID-19 virus. Our first mass count this year was conducted in March before the full impact of COVID 19 hit us. The upcoming count will help us to understand its impact on parishes at this time and provide us with figures to compare with when we conduct the next count in early 2021.

The next Mass count will be on the weekend of Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November 2020.

All Souls Day Mass and Offering Envelops

During the month of November, we fondly remember and pray for our loved ones who have gone before us. Throughout the month of November, we shall remember them and pray for them.

There will be three Masses on this day (9am, 12pm and 7pm). During the month of November, it is also our custom that we offer Mass for the departed members of our families and pray for their souls.

All Souls Day Mass offering envelopes will be available in the side foyers of the Church and the Parish Office.  These Envelopes can be placed on the collection plate or handed to the parish office; an offering in the envelope is customary.

All Soul’s Day Mass at West Chapel, Fremantle Cemetery

A mass to commemorate All Souls Day will be held at Fremantle Cemetery in the West Chapel on Monday 2 November at 6pm. The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board welcomes all parishioners to this spiritual occasion. All visitors are asked to park in the Carrington Street car park.
