Dear Parishioners and Friends
Greetings to you all from the Basilica of St. Patrick
Reflection for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A
The readings for this Sunday remind us that Christian discipleship demands the following: self-control (“Deny yourself”), the willingness to suffer (“take up your cross”), generosity (“to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God”), and readiness to follow Jesus by obeying his commandment of love.
Last Sunday we meditated on how Jesus appreciated Peter for recognising him as the Messiah and thus placed Peter as the head of the Church; calling him the rock and on this rock, I will build my church. But today we see an entirely different picture of Jesus’ attitude towards Peter, calling him as a Satan. Why did Jesus strongly admonish Peter? Peter has grasped the fact that Jesus was the Messiah but has not grasped it fully as to what it really meant. The disciples were still thinking of Jesus in terms of a conquering Messiah, a warrior king, who would sweep the Romans from Palestine and lead Israel to power. In other words, the disciples were seeking the path of glory but to Jesus it was the path of the cross. Let us always remember that true discipleship consists of following Jesus by denying ourselves fully for the sake of the Kingdom.
Fr. John David OMI
Fr John David Chodagiri OMI joined the Oblates in Fremantle in early 2019 and he quickly adapted to the life in the Fremantle Parish.
In April 2020 Fr John David was to be transferred to Burpengary Parish, Queensland but due to the COVID 19 virus, his transfer was delayed. Fr Christian Fini, the Australian Provincial, has now made the decision to move the Oblates who were due to be transferred earlier in the year. We have some parishes which have only one Priest in residence and they need assistance.
Therefore Fr John David will temporarily assist Fr Michael McMahon in Lesmurdie before he takes up his position as Administrator of the Burpengary Parish, Queensland.
His friendship, pastoral guidance and care for the Fremantle Catholic Community has been much appreciated and as he now journeys towards his new parish in Queensland we wish to take this opportunity to wish him well and thank him for his service.
Fr John David will leave the Fremantle Community next week with his last Mass being held in the Basilica on Thursday 3rd September at midday.
Parking in the School ground
The School Grounds will be unavailable for parking on Sunday 6 September due to the Annual Hot Rod Show. Thanks for your cooperation.
