Dear Parishioners and Friends!

Greetings to you all from the Basilica of St. Patrick

I hope you are all doing well and supporting one another at this difficult time of our history.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On Saturday 15 August, our Holy Mother the Church celebrates the Solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On November 1st 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: He said, “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever-Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The Pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation with bishops, theologians and laity.

For us Christians this is a great feast of hope. Mary entering triumphantly into heaven gives all of us hope in our eventual entry as well. What took place in her will happen to us also at the end times.

While reflecting on this Solemnity, Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI tells us that the feast of the Assumption is a day of joy because God has won, love has won, and humanity has won life.

As we celebrate this great Feast let us also imitate some of Mary’s humility, her hope, her acceptance and love.  Let us pray also to Mary to help us find the right path every day in our lives.

On 15th August we have 9am and 12pm masses to celebrate this important Holy day of Obligation in our Parish. As the State Government COVID-19 virus restrictions remain in place the temporary suspension of the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation is also granted by our Archbishop Timothy Costelloe. So, do not panic if you are not able to make it to the masses on that day.

Sad News

We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Fr Donal Madigan OMI who passed away on Friday morning at about 8:30 am Melbourne time. He was an assistant priest in our Basilica of St. Patrick. Please remember him in your prayers. May he rest in peace.

Oblate Priests on annual retreat

On Sunday night the Oblate Priests in the Australian Province will commence their annual retreat. Due to COVID-19 virus, this year the annual retreat will be through Zoom. Please keep us in your prayers as we will remember you all especially during our annual retreat time.

Readings and Hymns

We continue to upload the readings and the hymns for the Sunday masses. Thank you sincerely for all your support with this idea as the COVID-19 virus restrictions are in place. For this week readings and hymns please click here.

I wish you all a happy weekend.

God bless you all!
